About AI Sideways

AI Sideways was born from a single image, and a moment of realization. When I uploaded a photo of my avatar, Bernadette, into multiple AI platforms, I expected consistent results. Instead, I uncovered something unsettling: depending on the system, her appearance, age, gender, and even perceived emotion changed drastically.

This wasn’t a glitch, it was a signal. A sideways glance at how bias creeps into the foundations of AI.

At AI Sideways, we investigate the subtle and not-so-subtle ways that AI sees us differently. Our mission is to make those differences visible, understandable, and actionable.

Whether you’re a creator, founder, or just curious about how machine vision affects real-world perception, this project offers a space to explore those edges.

AI Sideways is not just about bias, it’s about giving people the tools to see differently.

Our current focus:

  • A real-time image testing tool that compares outputs from top AI platforms (OpenAI, Google, and others)

  • A library of examples and research on how these systems interpret identity

  • Educational content for individuals and teams who want to use AI more consciously

This is still early work, but it’s purposeful. And if it resonates with you, I’d love for you to be part of it.
